Proving that hell is a literal place of eternal punishment…

 

This study is going to take a comprehensive look at hell and prove beyond a doubt the following things:

That hell is a literal place and those who go there are there for eternity.

 

“There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.  And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.  So it happened that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Then he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.  But Abraham said, Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.  And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, nor can those from there pass to us.  Then he said, I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, that they not also come to this place of torment.  Abraham said to him, They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.”  Luke 16:19-29

 

Here we have a story that is given to us that proves beyond a doubt the existence of hell.  The rich man died and was sent to hell.  This is not a parable, this really happened.  The sad fact is those who are not Saved, go to hell for eternity.  In fact that rich man is still there, right now.  Think about that.

 

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire having been prepared for the devil and his angels.”  Matthew 25:41

 

Shall we believe Jesus?  For He warns:

 

“The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all the stumbling blocks, and those who practice lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”  Matthew 13:41-42

 

“So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go forth, separate the wicked from among the righteous, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”  Matthew 13:49-50

 

“If your hand makes you stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to Gehenna, into the fire that shall never be quenched; where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.  And if your foot makes you stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into Gehenna, into the fire that shall never be quenched; where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.  And if your eye makes you stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into the fire of Gehenna; where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.”  Mark 9:43-48

 

“But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into Gehenna; yes, I say to you, Fear Him!”  Luke 12:5

 

Let’s continue…

 

“let burning coals fall upon them; let them be cast into the fire, into deep pits, that they rise not up again.”  Psalms 140:10

 

“And now already the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore any tree which does not bear good fruit is cut off and thrown into the fire.”  Matthew 3:10

 

“And if your right eye snares you into sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, and not your whole body be cast into Gehenna.  And if your right hand snares you into sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, and not your whole body be cast into Gehenna.”  Matthew 5:29-30

 

“Every tree that does not produce excellent fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”  Matthew 7:19

 

“If your hand or foot entices you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire.  And if your eye entices you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into the fire of Gehenna.”  Matthew 18:8-9

 

“for You will not leave My soul in Sheol; nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.”  Psalms 16:10

 

“Let death seize them, and let them go down alive into Sheol; for evil is among them and in their dwellings.”  Psalms 55:15

 

“But he does not know that the spirits of the dead are there; the ones she summons are in the depths of Sheol.”  Proverbs 9:18

 

“I made the nations shake at the sound of its fall, when I cast it down to Sheol together with those who descend into the Pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, were comforted in the depths of the earth.  They also went down to Sheol with it, with those slain by the sword; and those who were its arm, who dwelt in its shadows among the nations.”  Ezekiel 31:16-17

 

“They do not lie with the mighty of the uncircumcised who are fallen, who have gone down to Sheol with their weapons of war; they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities will be on their bones, though the terror of the mighty was in the land of the living.”  Ezekiel 32:27

 

“If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is dried up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.”  John 15:6

 

Proof that hell is eternal…

 

“And the devil, who led them astray, was cast into the Lake of Fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”  Revelation 20:10

 

“And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one, according to their works.  And Death and Hades were cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death.  And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the Lake of Fire.”  Revelation 20:13-15

 

“And many of those sleeping in the earth’s dust shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to reproach and everlasting abhorrence.”  Daniel 12:2

 

There are many different names of hell in the Holy Scriptures, this study will take a look at those different names.

 

Sheol

 

“And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, I will go down into Sheol mourning for my son. Thus his father wept for him.”  Genesis 37:35

 

“As the cloud vanishes and goes away, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come up.”  Job 7:9

 

Abaddon

 

“Sheol is naked before Him, and Abaddon has no covering.”  Job 26:6

 

“And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon.”  Revelation 9:11

 

Grave

 

“My spirit is broken, my days are extinguished, the grave is ready for me.”  Job 17:1

 

“free among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, and who have been cut off from Your hand.”  Psalms 88:5

 

Hades

 

“And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.”  Matthew 11:23

 

“And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.”  Luke 16:23

 

Tartarus

 

“For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to Tartarus and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment.”  2 Peter 2:4

 

Death

 

“O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?”  1^st Corinthians 15:55

 

“And Death and Hades were cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death.”  Revelation 20:14

 

Gehenna

 

“But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, Empty head! shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, You fool! shall be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.”  Matthew 5:22

 

“And do not fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul. But rather fear Him who has power to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.”  Matthew 10:28

 

Lake of Fire

 

“And the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he led astray those who received the mark of the beast and those who did homage to his image. These two were cast alive into the Lake of Fire burning with brimstone.”  Revelation 19:20

 

“And Death and Hades were cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death.  And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the Lake of Fire.”  Revelation 20:14-15
