The Ultimate Gift

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 6:23   This time of year people are busy purchasing gifts to give to others.  The other day was a very busy mailing day at the local post office in Kalispell, Montana, the line being, as expected, very long.  A lot of people have high hopes of getting some of the things that they have asked for or stated that they would like to receive, especially children.    In much of the world the same thing goes on, with some different varieties.  Despite the fact that the Savior was very highly likely not born on the 25th of December, people nonetheless purpose to celebrate such an occasion, due to historical reasons that they are unaware of.    Many people this time of year write about putting ‘Christ back in christmas’, but in those regards, I would be the oddity to suggest that Christ should never be involved with such a mass.  You can read more about the origins of many holidays with the link on the right hand side of the homepage, clicking on the book Holy Days to download a free ebook.  For the purpose of this, the discussion will be simply looking at the vanity of humanity in the pursuits that are undertaken by the masses, verses the free gift that God has made available to all.   What qualifies as a good gift?  Thoughtfulness, overall value, necessities or something else?  Well, there is not one standard answer for such things, but both would be determined...

Are We Not Yet Destroyed?

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”  Hosea 4:6a   “Behold, is it not of Jehovah of Hosts that the people labor only to feed the fire, and nations weary themselves only for vanity.”  Habakkuk 2:13   The other day I noticed a click-bait advertisement for photos of life in the 1950’s.  Knowing history in the United States fairly well, I decided to see what exactly they were trying to push with such an article.    While going through it, I noticed that they spent some time discussing how easy it was for a one income family back in the 1950’s to purchase a home and pay it off.  Now my family history has an oddity to it, as my father was much older than the average father.  So for many years, until his death, I heard of stories of how things worked back when he was young.   Growing up in northern Michigan, I also got my hands on a book about the Hedrick family of Harbor Springs, who offered a very good first hand account of the early settler days in that region of the state.  While that was in the late 1800’s, still the accounts of everyday life for the average person was somewhat similar.    At 40 years old, I have had discussions with my friends for many years regarding the cost of living, verses trying to carve out a niche in the world.  When I was younger I had aspirations to go to college and get a degree in meteorology.  There were a lot of things that my wife and I talked about...

Suddenly, But Not Without Warning

“But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.  For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and did not realize until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.  Then two will be in the field: one is taken and the other is left.  Two will be grinding at the mill: one is taken and the other is left.  Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord comes.  But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief comes, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be dug through.  Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man comes at an hour you do not expect.  Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made administrator over his household, to give them food in due season?  Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing.  Truly, I say to you that he will appoint him as administrator over all his possessions.  But if that wicked servant says in his heart, My master delays his coming, and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not expecting him and in an hour he does not know, and will cut him...

Could it be?

A much bigger portion of the Holy Scriptures being used to open an article than normal.  However, sometimes in order to have a full understanding this is necessary.   “And the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.  When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon and set it next to Dagon.  And when those of Ashdod arose early the next day, behold, Dagon was fallen on his face to the earth before the ark of Jehovah. So they took Dagon and put him back on his place.  And when they arose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah. The head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were broken off on the threshold; only Dagon’s torso was left to him.  Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon’s house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.  And the hand of Jehovah was heavy upon those of Ashdod, and He ravaged them and struck them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territories.  And when the men of Ashdod saw how it was, they said, The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for His hand has been severe upon us and Dagon our god.  Therefore they sent and gathered to themselves all the rulers of the Philistines, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the...

Christ Won the Battle

“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”  Isaiah 5:20   “Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?”  James 3:11   The mid-term elections are upon us and about the time this article is published, the outcome will be known.  Here in Montana there are record breaking amounts of people who have already voted and registered.  I heard that in Texas the voting there for young adults was 500% more than the last mid-term election.  Truly it seems that this election is a battle between good and evil.     For years it has been said that our two-party system is a left-right paradigm.  I somewhat agree, but also somewhat disagree.  Fifty years ago a Christian could have legitimately voted democratic, but nowadays?  For me, as a Christian, I would never vote for someone who is for abortion, quite simply because God’s Word is quite clear that life begins at conception.  Abortion is murder, there is no doubt about it.      “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”  Jeremiah 1:5     “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.”  Psalms 139:13     “Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was...

Ducks Quack

“And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.”  2nd Corinthains 5:15   “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.  Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.  Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?  Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.  A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.  Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.  Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”  Matthew 7:13-23   We spent a couple of weeks going over what is means to be an...
